The Company

Geographx is a privately-owned mapping and cartographic design company based in Wellington, New Zealand.

  • We design and make maps to order.
  • We offer GIS professional/consulting services.
  • We develop map data for cartographers and the GIS sector.
  • We produce and have for sale a range of maps and related print products.
  • We represent SkylineGlobe and its virtual globe software products in the New Zealand market.

The name Geographx is drawn from the Greek words Geo (the earth) and graphein (written or drawn information). Over the past ten years the company has earned a reputation both for its maps and for visualising terrain in new and meaningful ways.  A small but focused group of professional staff make up the team.

The Geographx office and studio is the Dominion Observatory, a registered historic building we lease from the New Zealand Department of Conservation. It is located in the Wellington Botanic Garden on an elevated site with commanding views over the city and harbour. We are located only metres from the Cable Car top station and minutes from the heart of the Wellington CBD.

The Dominion Observatory was built in 1907 to accurately determine New Zealand time by reference to the sun and stars. The past associations with time-keeping, astronomy and maritime navigation make it New Zealand’s closest equivalent to the Royal Observatory at Greenwich in London.

Adjacent to  the observatory is the Garden Gun Battery and associated tunnel system, both of which date back to the Russian scare of 1896. On the front lawn stands a kauri flagpole and the Krupp Gun, a shrapnel-scarred cannon captured by the NZ Division on the Western Front towards the end of World War I.
